This tutorial assumes you have the knowledge gained from working with the previous tutorials. After this tutorial you will have the ability to Filter/Find information within the displayed result set, from a selection of various options.

Perform the following steps:

• If the Query Tool is already running, please close it down. Invoke the NuVu Query Designer from the NuVu Query program group from the windows Start menu. The main NuVu Query Designer window will be displayed, and a welcome dialog window will also be displayed that shows recently saved/opened queries. We are going to select a previously created query “Customer Orders”, so highlight on the ‘Customer Orders’ item and click OK.

  

• Click the button to start the execution (running) of the query. This step will create a set of Filters/Find results that we can use. Example of results data shown here:



• Place your mouse over the “Name” column, then right click to activate the drop-down menu. Select “Filter the Grids result rows”. The Filter option screen will open, as shown below:



• Select the “Begins with” option, and advise “P” in the associated editor box, then click OK (or press ENTER).
• You will see that only names starting with “P” has been returned. You will also see the column is highlighted in a pale yellow, indictating that the column is now filtered.



• To de-activate the filter on any column (for example the “Name” column), right-click on the column label (“Name” in this example) and select the “Filter the Grids result rows” option, then simply click on the “No Filter” option. This can be used after any Filter/Find Option to return the query to its original form.



• The “Ends With” option is very similar to the “Begins With” so will not be demonstrated here.
• The “Contains” option is useful if you want to filter on any rows that contain a specific value. Right-click on the “Sales Rep” column, and select the “Filter the Grids result rows” option from the pop-up menu, and advise the following:



• You will see that only rows that have a “Sales Rep” that contains “BBB” have been returned.
• De-activate your filter as explained above.
• The “Does not contain” option is an exact inverse of the “Contains” option, in that only rows that do NOT match the advised criteria will be shown.
• The “Equals” option is pretty self-explanatory – will select rows where the contents of the cell equals (case-insensitive) the value that was advised next to the option.
• De-activate your filter as explained above.
• The most powerful option is the “Expression” option. This allows you to advise a condition that if true will filter the result row (hide it), otherwise show it. Right-click on the “Balance” column header, and choose the “Filter” option – then advise the following:



• The {cell} refers to the current cell (row/column reference) and the condition is that it must filter (hide) the rows that contain anything < 40000 or > 50000 in this column.
• Multiple filters can be achieved as well. By not clearing the original filter, you may then filter another column and the results rows will be filtered based on both (or more) filters.

FINDING TEXT:

The Find option is very similar to the Filter option, the difference being that the results are not filtered (hidden).

• Right-click on the “Name” column and select the “Find Text in this column”



• For purposes of this tutorial we will select the “Down” direction (which denotes the initial search direction) and click OK. This will search downward through the result set until the first occurrance of a Name that starts with “I” is found. Once that occurrance is located and displayed, you may press the F3 button to find the next occurrance, or Ctrl-F3 to search for the previous occurrance.
